Toa Maiden Rides Off Into Sunset Some More

Fun with Photoshop and Inkscape. Preceding pages deal with the Toa Maiden's distress about the fate of Mata Nui (lay folk can stop reading now) and a vision of the Glatorians. Writing the script for these is the hardest part. Even so, the results don't quite rise to barely acceptable.

Toa Today with Gali

A new episode every six years, as regular as clockwork! The first Toa Today was only a little more in-universe.

Test of CSS Layers

If you see "YEE HAW!" and Bionicle then layers are working as expected. If you see "YEE HAW" and grey, you are probably using IE.

Bionicle teaser from Brickmaster

Mysterious Bionicle entity advertised in recent Lego Club Magazine. Although I think that to the lay person, everything about Bionicle is mysterious, if not actually impenetrable. ("Not Karzahni the sentient plant, but Karzahni the being named after Karzahni the place. Duh!")

Brickmaster is a premium service that includes a subscription to a set of small models that are sent bi-monthly. It's a reasonable value for the pan-Legoista. this ad was the sole Bionicle mention in the entire magazine which was cover-to-cover filled with licensed products: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Batman, SpongeBob and Speed Racer.

Lego set: Jungle Duel

Not as awesome as the previous small sets, this one has its charms. The collection of red ants is amusing as is the breakaway camp table. The tent is an even more sophisticated use of the stiff cloth/paper used in the truck chase set. The movie will no doubt explain why there is a spinning display case full of edged weapons in the jungle. I am afraid that Mutt's monogrammed leather biker jacket is self-explanatory. Lego has provided Mutt with a standard issue minifig knife. I bet money with myself that this will turn out to be a switchblade.

Playmat for "Temple Escape" LEGO set

Click for a larger version. I have colored it digitally because the original is very low contrast. It was loads of fun to make!

Which LEGO Indiana Jones set best captures the feel of its respective scene?

The Toa Maiden No More

20080415_toa_maiden_no_more

A few words of explanation for the obscurer parts. The middle section with the parted out interrogation machine was planned to include a maelstrom of spinning parts, a la the original Mata Nui game with reference to Makuta. Consequent to the maelstrom, the yellow gear was sent spinning to hit Vezon in the head but this action is unclear. There are a couple of unamended beauty shots of the new form that slow down the action. After she boots Scout in the head, she is meant to be letting out a long-suppressed cry of frustration mixed with patently homicidal glee. She ends up merely "milking the giant cow." After moving the bad guys, she spends some time either pointing her finger at them or summoning cosmic energies of lashing ferocity.

The Toa Maiden is Interrogated

For those who have not been following along, the Toa Maiden always seems to get in dutch with the most recent iteration of Bionicle. She combines characteristics of Emma Peel and Gilligan. There's often an argument, accusations, misunderstandings, incriminations, mutations, sometimes tears and then ROBOT MONSTER FIGHTING ACTION. In this instance, the mint-chocolate fellow is known as Scout; he and the Toa Maiden have been at odds for a while. The one dressed as Death is known as Vezon and has one of the more complicated back stories in the Bionicle universe, which is wall-to-wall complicated back story. Suffice to say it doesn't bear on the current action.

iBook stand made of ZNAP

Picasa Web Albums - Carbunicle - 20080306_ZNAP...

The problem: I wanted my iBook to be at the same height as the monitor. I have a small supply of ZNAP taking up space. The solution: iBook stand made of ZNAP. ZNAP was a short-lived product from LEGO to compete directly with K'NEX. The lack of an apostrophe may have been all the difference. Since then, K'NEX has integrated LEGO studs into their toy.

the rocks above the blasted heath in the far north beyond the savage lands

A little scene between two field agents on a mission to the universe that also contains the Toa Maiden. They may be from the future.

Here is the yellow gnome that Red refers to.

Mutran & Vican

The current crop of Bionicle includes this set, which is labeled "Special Edition." The specialness is that it is actually two sets in one box. There are no unique or particularly collectible aspects to it. The box has a window in the front which peeks in on a sort of diorama background. It is hard to capture in a 2-D photo but it's eye-catching.

The toy itself is very much like the others in its cohort. This particular character has more claws and knives, and has wings which have more articulation than the others.
